Preparing for a Repair After an Accident

Start with the vehicle

Record the year, make and model and where the damage is located. Note whether the vehicle has been towed, whether doors open normally, and any warnings or behavior that appeared after the incident. Do not use this checklist to decide a damaged vehicle is safe to drive.

Gather useful records

Keep the incident and claim reference numbers, insurer contact information and any estimate already provided. Take wide and close damage photos only where it is safe to do so.

Plan the arrival

Call before arranging transport. Confirm that the shop can accept the vehicle, the next available intake time and where it should be delivered. Ask what documents and keys are needed, and keep a copy of the condition record.
